when the woman behind the podium
she was a pretty woman
she asked what a woman
she sounded tough
and the woman behind the podium
and she said yes
and the woman behind the podium
told her that she could tell this
and then the woman behind the podium
and by the tone of the woman’s voice
and her response was
now, I know the healing process for rape
and here was this woman
all of her defenses would fall
I felt like her mother
she was my baby
nothing I could have taught her
rape education one
I sat in on a seminar
being held at a university
about acquaintance rape
asked if there were any other questions,
a woman raised her hand
could do through the university
to prosecute the man
she sounded professional
asked if this woman was raped
empathized with her,
told her she was raped
when she was thirteen
certain department at the university
and they would bring a hearing on him
asked, well, if you don’t mind my asking,
when did this happen to you
she was so calm so collected
I expected her to say
a few years ago
six days ago
I’ve studied it in books
first there’s denial, then anger, fear
some of these steps last for years
so calm so collected
to tough so professional
and I just knew
that one day
and it would all hit her
and she would fall
apart
and I wanted to deliver her
from the pain
but there was nothing I could do
I felt so helpless
would prepare her for this
