a Very Goth Beach Party
Beach Poets Sunday, July 3rd 2011 (07/03/11)

Janet Kuypers featured at Beach Poets at Loyola Beach in Chicago (Greenleaf and the lake, just east of Sheridan Road and 4 blocks north of the Loyola el stop, near Heartland Cafe), hosted by Cathleen Schandelmeier and Peter Bartels, on Sunday, July 3rd 2011, along with blues musician and poet Cousin Bones (when she met him at Beach Poets the previous year, she immediately asked him to feature at the poetry/performance art open mic she hosts at the Café). Because when she met Cousin Bones the previous year at Beach Poets, he came with his guitar fressed in all black (black shirt and pants and shoes, on the beach in the middle of the day), so she knew she had to wear black to this feature while he played guitar behind some of her poetry and call this show “a Ver Goth Poetry Feature”.

Because of a “mini spy camera” she just got (and to test to see how the mini camera works), Kuypers taped the camera to the brim of her black cap (while the hat had a Morrissey image promoting Vegetarianism, along with the Smith album title “Meat is Murder” — to make her goth image look more complete, of course) and got an additional recording of actually just her mough as she performed the entire show. Because the camera (and the camera’s microphone) was so close to her, her vocals from this camera are slightly distorted, but it is a loud additional vocal rendition of this performance (with fewer noises from the beach or the audience in this audio recording).

Most of the poems chosen for this show were ready for background music from Cousin Bones, but a select few pieces — a poem that was meant to be sung (which John Yotko sang along with) and one3 song at the end of the show (that Janet Kuypers wrote the lyrics for and helped design the music for with John Yotko). The last poem in the show was also a suggestion for everyone to sing any song to while she read (and John Yotko sang, and Cousin Bones, played the harmonica to). So check out the chapbook and the video links below from this live beach performance!.
